Frequently Asked Questions
What is Sozo?
Sozo is a church-based ministry framework of helping to heal individuals (both inside and outside the church) of the effects of wounding and sin, and of delivering people from the snares and presence of the demonic through finding past and present lies and points of access, removing them, and establishing healing, blessing and obedience in their place; and of restoring individuals to relationship with God and a more fruitful and fulfilling walk.
Where did Sozo come from?
Prayer and deliverance ministry have been around since Jesus
demonstrated His power on earth as he healed (sozoed) many that came to
Him. The term "Sozo" is a Greek word from the New Testament that means
to save, make whole, heal, to be whole, rescue from danger, and deliver
(basically, to save in every imaginable way!). Matthew 18:11 says "the Son of Man is come to save (sozo) that which was lost." Jesus came to
completely restore back to us all that the lies of the enemy have stolen
from us! This particular style or format for ministry has evolved (and
continues to evolve) from roots in the Argentine revivals, the
understanding and writings of various practitioners of inner healing and
deliverance, and from the experience of several churches and individuals
including Randy Clark's ministry and Bethel Church in Redding,
California. It is changing and growing as we all learn, grow, and share
experiences and tools with each other.
What is the biblical basis for what you are doing?
There is a lot we can say and we refer you to "The Kitchen Sink" manual
if you like to read! We often refer to a key scripture: You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; The Son of God
appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 1 Jn
3:5,9b.
Sozo works directly with the two central purposes of Jesus' ministry:
(1) take away sins (ours, and the result of other's sins in our lives)
and to
(2) destroy the works of the devil.
We work under the guidance of God's Holy Spirit in ministering these two key things to people (Rom 8:14). We believe we are competent to "speak the truth in love" (Eph
4:15) with each other and in so ding to partner with God in helping to
mature and perfect them. We believe God has given authority to cast
out/away demons from people (Mk 16:17).
Who controls Sozo?
Sozo is not a ministry in the conventional sense of having been started
by one person or a few people and then being guided and controlled by
them. Think of it more like AA and less like Sozo, Inc. It is more of a
movement of people who love to participate in inner healing and
deliverance, share the same DNA, and want to communicate and pass on in
a pure fashion what we are learning and partner with others to impart,
learn, and share. We read, experience revelation, try things out, share
what we are learning, and grow together. We are debt to, and freely
honor and credit, many ministries and individuals for sharing their
insights and revelation. We encourage each other to the key principles
and understandings. It is sort of like a giant puzzle where God seems to
have given pieces to different ones. When we push our pieces to the
middle and take our hands off of them then they are free to be used by
many and to find their place in all God is doing and revealing. He began
a good work and we trust Him to lead it. We are stewards of what we have
Of course its dangerous to do it this way!
What is The Freedom Resource?
The Freedom Resource is an outgrowth of ministry teams and relationships
across several churches and ministries in middle Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Sozo's original source, Betel Church in Redding, CA.. As the
relationships grew and the need to help others became apparent we felt
it would be best to form a special organization that was nimble in its
ability to help others get started, provided free materials, and was linked. As it grew we all saw the benefit of a web site in helping to keep Sozo on course and the growing number of churches and ministries connected - friends and co-laborers sharing what we have learned and eagerly learning from others.
Is Sozo like professional counseling?
Sozo ministry is not "professional" in that Sozo ministers are not
degreed counselors, but simply Christians with a desire to help each
other overcome obstacles and strongholds in their lives. Sozo ministers
are Christians from a variety of church affiliations and backgrounds and
all of them have had training and experience as an observer and
assistant before being in charge of a session. Sozo is not counseling,
in that it may only consist of one or a few sessions, which tend to be
approximately one to two hours in length. Each session is designed to
help remove roadblocks and hindrances to spiritual growth,
relationships, and intimacy with Jesus. One of our favorite things about
What is a session like? What is the approach?
Scripture is clear that the enemy takes advantage of our wounds and sin
to hold us in bondage. He is able to gain access at specific points in
time through "open doors." When we find those doors and close them, we
remove any right of access. As a result, we are finally able to gain
Sozo typically operates through the ministry of a two - to - three - person team in one or more sessions of one to three hours each. Sessions are gentle, confidential, friendly, relaxed and informal. The role of the "sozoee" is simple - they are just the reporter of what they are feeling, seeing, hearing or sensing. We rely on God to lead each session and often stop and ask Him what He thinks. It is low pressure because our goal is simple to do only what God wants done in any session - not to have to hit a homerun.
The session involves prayer and the leading of the Holy Spirit and the use of various tools and techniques such as "The Father Ladder", "Presenting Jesus", "The Four Doors", "Defenses and Protectors" and more. We "Do Kingdom Business" through confessing, renouncing, breaking, declaring, etc. We take authority and cast out.
Every Sozo ministry session is different because, in each session, the Sozo team relies on the leading and revelation of the Holy Spirit to guide the direction and steps.
